Coach Dakotah Fringe Bag

Coach is in the middle of a major reinvention, and now the first full collection from creative director Stuart Vevers has arrived for purchase. The line is inspired by the American West and traditional workwear, and the bags have a slightly rough-around-the-edges feel that will be new to many of the brand’s longtime fans. Naturally, the collection includes a bunch of brand new handbags.

The two most notable additions to the Coach handbag lineup are the Rhyder and Dakotah lines. The Rhyder is a pieced-together satchel that comes in a variety of sizes, and although it’s received the lion’s share of Coach’s marketing push, the bag often feels overworked and over-designed. The Dakotah, on the other hand, is the star of the show; it feels natural and uncomplicated, even when decorated with long fringe, and its leather is thick and expensive-feeling in person.

It’s important that these bags feel expensive, because Coach is also making a push to increase its prices and expand its offerings into a full-scale premium-contemporary lifestyle brand. The best argument in favor of that move is the brand’s lush outerwear; although it’s not our main concern, I’ve included a couple of pieces of it alongside a selection of the fall bags below. It’s too good to skip entirely, even if it’s not a bag.
